‘Gully Boy’ trailer: Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt bring alive underground hip-hop

Based on the life of Divine (Vivian Fernandes) and Naezy (Naved Shaikh), underground rappers from Mumbai and their journey from the lanes of the city to acquiring popularity, ‘Gully Boy’ will see Ranveer Singh return to the genre of cinema that he’s done quite well in. His recent outing ‘Simmba’ saw him play a loud, over-the-top, brash cop in his self-confessed first-ever masala film. And the audience accepted the film with much love, as it’s on its way to becoming one of Ranveer’s highest-earning films.
While Ranveer has worked with his co-star Alia Bhatt in a few commercials, the audience’s attention was piqued ever since they were announced as the protagonists of ‘Gully Boy’. Alia is also basking in glory with her last film ‘Raazi’ proving to be a hit with the masses and the critics alike. The young superstars, after a supremely successful 2018, are now entering the new year with another film that appears promising.
Zoya Akhtar marks her return to ‘Gully Boy’ after a hiatus of almost four years after her last film ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, which also starred Ranveer. Last week, an official “trailer announcement” was made online, via the film’s team members’ social media handles. The one-and-half-minute long video clip showed glimpses from the film along with Ranveer rapping verses penned by Spitfire.

The film’s official much-awaited trailer brings a more fleshed-out perspective of the film’s narrative and plot, along with more of “asli hip-hop”. While Ranveer plays a struggling rapper, Alia plays a young Muslim girl from his neighbourhood. Kalki, on the other hand, portrays a rich carefree brat.

It has been reported that Divine also taught Ranveer how to rap for the film. While Ranveer’s connection with Naezy goes much deeper, as the latter has previously done playback singing/rapping for the actor in songs and some television commercials in the past. Most notably, in the song ‘Birju’ from Ganesh Acharya’s 2015 film ‘Hey Bro’. ‘Gully Boy’ will feature songs crooned by Ranveer himself.

About to premiere at the upcoming 69th Berlin Film Festival, ‘Gully Boy’ will run at the fest from February 7 to 17 this year. The film will release back home in India on Valentine’s Day February 14, 2019.
